8th August 2025 Korschenbroich

 There is a lot preparation to be done this morning to set us up for the next couple of days. We start by heading out at a reasonable time to get the shopping done , so we can start cooking on our return.

But before we do start cooking, there is one cute little dog who would really love a walk. Carlo for some reason has been ignoring Stuart and I but this walk may have mellowed him a little as he really seemed to be playing games with us. The walk is through a beautiful forest that just happens to be across the road.



Burkhard and Stuart are very excited by this prospect but willing to be hands on with Beate to get this part done. So whilst Beate and I cooked, the backyard transformed. The lights and tents went up and our dinner table grew from seating for 8 to seating for 20 due to Burkhard and Stuart’s handiwork.




There are 5 of Tina and Harry’s dearest are coming from the UK  to stay for the celebration weekend and they will arrive about 5pm with 2 more arriving tomorrow.



Tinas sisters. Louisa and Leonie have arrived and also Tinas brother Daniel.


Beate has chosen an Italian theme for tonight’s dinner, so it’s all about red chequered tablecloths, lots of lights and great food. 

We set about making a huge lasagne and another vegetarian pasta.






We have a very busy afternoon but by the end we have prepared an awful lot for tomorrow  big party as well.

Everyone arrived, a fabulous meal, loads of laughs and a truly wonderful evening.

  For my birthday this year Harry and Tina have gifted Stuart and I with a cheeky trip to Berlin.  This is a city that with all my gallivanting around in the 1980’s, I didn’t get to and have always wanted to. If  I had come at that time, it was 1989 and the time that the wall was coming down.Such an historical time. So 30 odd years later here we are. Up early to be prepared, I am very excited for this trip, although feeling a bit guilty leaving the Benders when they  are graciously having us stay. Both Beate and Burkhard have given there blessing, probably happy to not have us underfoot for a few days whist they party  plan. Anyhoo, Tina and Harry also graciously get up early to drive us to the Düsseldorf Bahnhoffen for a four and half hour trip to Berlin.  Apparently the German trains are notoriously late, which surprises  me but not today. 7th August 2025. Berlin to Korschenbroich

 Up pretty early to make the most of essentially a travel day and of course we know that Schillers Deli is open, so we pack ourselves up and head off. With not much time we decide to again walk towards our destination ( train station) and tourist along the way.  From the Deli it’s an easy walk to the Tiergarten, it’s a beautiful park and quite big I think. It’s like a forest in the middle of the city. Full of cyclists and runners doing their thing at this time of day. One thing we notice is there are many cyclists and they look like mostly commuters on their way to work or study.  We don’t see this as much on the Gold Coast as there really isn’t the mutual respect between driver and cyclists. Anyhoo, I digress We find ourselves on the Straße Des 17 Juni and the With the Brandenberg Gate and the Pariser Platz at one end and the Victory Column at the other. 3rd August 2025

A pretty restful night only waking about 3 ish, when I think we were actually ready to get up or perhaps it was the guard dog Carlo announcing to the late arrival of Daniel, Tina’s brother… Spoiled with the lovely breakfast that Beate prepares, that set us up for the day. Quick walk to the bakery for the fresh breads and then setting a table with cold meats, cheeses and lots of condiments. Today’s plan is a picnic in the Bolton Brewery which is super close by. The brewery that started brewing in 1266 This is the brewery or rather the beer that we became quite accustomed to last time we were here. To fill in a little time before lunch ( and whilst Harry and Tina gym) Beate and Burkhard take us to a village close by for a wander around. The village of  Leidberg.  It is just beautiful and remains fairly untouched and original. There is a castle, which is privately owned now and a tower that we are able to climb.
